Sophia Nicol
Hometown: Vancouver, BC
Home Club/Range: 177 Red Dot Club
Disciplines: Women's 10m Air Pistol
Started Shooting: I started shooting on June 7, 2022. The first day Sophia trained was a special day… It was her mom’s birthday! That day, she remembers going with a friend to 177 Club to try out pistol shooting. At the time, Sophia had no clue about this sport, it was just something new to try. But after shooting her first set, she had an inkling that she would be back at the club very soon. And since then, this precision sport has grown to become an innate part of who Sophia is.
Highlights: Making it on the junior national team and having the honour to compete on the same line as Olympians - Mich Esercitato & Lynda Kjeiko. This has been a big inspiration for Sophia, and has instilled a flame of hope within her that she too, can do something amazing.
Best advice received: Focus on the present.
Favourite Memory: Competing overseas with team Canada. Being able to watch and learn from everyone, and feeling the team spirit has made Sophia fall in love with shooting even more. Everyone is so supportive & positive, and she knows that when I need any advice she can go to any one of her team members. Shooting is an individual sport that can feel lonely at times but knowing that she has her coach & teammates behind her makes every match such a fond experience.
Hobbies: Playing the piano, acting, ballet, skiing, debate, choir, & badminton.
Fun Fact: Sophia’s favourite thing to do in the summer is to go jet skiing & surf towing
